Today June 19th 2026, A commemoration ceremony in memory of ActionAid Rwanda staff who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi was held in Kibilizi Sector. The event was attended by the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs (VM AFSO), the Country Director of ActionAid Rwanda, the District Commander of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), and ActionAid staff from across the country and Kibilizi Citizens as well.
The commemoration began with a visit to the Kabuye District Genocide Memorial in Ndora Sector, where participants received a briefing on how the Genocide against the Tutsi was carried out in the district and its impact. They paid tribute to the victims laid to rest at the memorial and laid wreaths on the graves. The activities then continued in Kibilizi Sector, where ActionAid operates.
In her remarks, the Vice Mayor in Charge of Social Affairs encouraged residents and ActionAid Rwanda staff to learn from the country's history by promoting unity, self-reliance, resilience, and safeguarding the achievements made after the Genocide.
As part of the commemoration, ActionAid provided 675 iron roofing sheets and 150 kilograms of nails to roof 15 houses, food assistance for 35 vulnerable families, and support to the genocide memorial. The total value of this assistance was RWF 11,351,000.
Chinese and Egyptian Ambassadors Visit Gisagara District
On Thursday, 2 July 2026, the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Rwanda, H.E. Gao Wenqi, and the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Rwanda, H.E. Hanan AbdelAziz Elsaid Shahin, paid a working visit to Gisagara District.
The visit began with a tour of the Congolese refugee camp in Mugombwa Sector, where the ambassadors interacted with stakeholders and observed the living conditions of the refugees. They commended the strong social cohesion and peaceful coexistence between the refugees and the host community, describing it as a positive example of solidarity and integration.
In the afternoon, the ambassadors visited the Hakan Peat Power Plant in Mamba Sector. They received a comprehensive briefing on the plant's operations, with particular emphasis on its environmentally sustainable practices. They were informed that the plant's by-products are utilized by other industries, including CIMERWA, while the wastewater generated during production is treated before being safely discharged into the public water system.
The ambassadors highly appreciated the plant's commitment to environmental protection, its application of modern technology, and its contribution to Rwanda's energy sector. They also commended the project's positive impact on the socio-economic development and improved livelihoods of the surrounding communities.
During the visit, the ambassadors toured the facility to observe its operations firsthand and expressed their admiration for the project's technological innovation and sustainable approach to power generation.
Key Activities Carried Out in Gisagara District on July, 7th 20226
On Tuesday, 7 July 2026, a number of activities took place across Gisagara District. The District Administration is pleased to present a summary of the major activities that characterized the day.
1. This morning, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., community sanitation activities were carried out in all sectors. At the district level, the exercise took place in Duwani Cell, Kibilizi Sector, and was attended by the Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development (VM ED) together with the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs (VM AFSO).
Overall, the activities focused on:
- Clearing and cleaning roads;
- Constructing houses for vulnerable families;
- Cleaning public places, with particular emphasis on trading centers; and
- Other community sanitation activities.
2. Like elsewhere in the country, this morning in Gisagara District, the national primary school leaving exams (P6) began. The Mayor of the District launched them at GS Gisagara A, while the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs launched them at GS Kinteko.
In total, in the District, all the children sitting the exams are 7,343.
3. The Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development (VM ED) received the DOT Rwanda team during the introduction and deployment of seven Digital Champions and Business Coaches. Of these, three will serve in the Mugombwa Refugee Camp, while the remaining four will be deployed in the sectors of Muganza, Musha, Kigembe, and Ndora. They will support youth by providing training in digital skills and entrepreneurship.
The meeting also reviewed the achievements of the previous cohort of six Digital Champions and Business Coaches who had completed their assignments. Their service concluded with an entrepreneurship competition for the youth they had trained, during which 50 outstanding young participants were recognized and awarded.
4. The Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development (VM ED) chaired a meeting with the partner One Acre Fund/Tubura, attended by district and sector agronomists. The meeting aimed to review the implementation of the 2026 Agricultural Seasons A and B and jointly prepare for the 2027 Agricultural Season A.
The meeting reached the following resolutions:
- Launch awareness campaigns early to encourage farmers to register for the Smart Nkunganire System (SNS) and ensure timely validation of registered beneficiaries;
- Encourage farmers to prepare and use organic manure alongside inorganic fertilizers to increase agricultural productivity;
- Recommend that agricultural lime be included in the Smart Nkunganire system so that it can be accessed and distributed in the same way as other agricultural inputs;
- Harmonize information and jointly monitor the ongoing coffee tree census being conducted in collaboration with NAEB; and
- Strengthen collaboration to improve productivity in FOBASI (Food Basket Sites).
5. The Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development (VM ED) received a team from Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) that is monitoring the outbreak of Rift Valley Fever in livestock.
During the meeting with the District Command Post Focal Person, the following priority actions were identified:
- Vaccinate cattle, goats, and sheep against Rift Valley Fever (RVF) to strengthen their immunity;
- Spray cattle, goats, and sheep with insecticides to protect them from mosquitoes that transmit the disease;
- Conduct mandatory inspection of livestock at all slaughterhouses before slaughter; and
- Request the equipment and supplies needed for livestock vaccination and insecticide spraying.
6. As part of the Joint Planning process, World Vision Rwanda today convened district officials and stakeholders from the sectors of Ndora and Gishubi, where it operates, to gather input for developing and approving this year's implementation plan for the two sectors.
The discussions focused on identifying priority interventions in the following areas:
- Education;
- Health;
- Economic development;
- Gender equality; and
- Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
7. Through the FXB Village Program, in partnership with GiveDirectly's cash transfer initiative, a follow-up visit was conducted today to assess how beneficiaries are utilizing the financial support provided after participating in various capacity-building trainings. The visit covered some of the 400 beneficiary households that received cash assistance.
8. In the afternoon, community assemblies were held in all cells across the district. At the district level, the assembly took place in Duwani Cell, Kibilizi Sector, and was attended by the District Mayor together with the District Police Commander (DPC).
After receiving and addressing citizens' concerns, the leaders sensitized residents on the following issues:
Taking an active role in resolving community challenges;
- Promoting development, valuing hard work, and avoiding harmful choices;
- Ensuring personal and community safety, and fostering peaceful coexistence;
- Protecting young people from drug abuse, including illicit alcohol and cannabis; and
- Reporting all illegal activities, as they are a major source of insecurity and violence observed in Duwani Cell.
The Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development (VM ED) attended the community assembly in Akaboti Cell, Kansi Sector, while the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs (VM AFSO) attended the community assembly in Mukande Cell, Ndora Sector.
