Gisagara district is made up of the former districts of Save, Mugombwa and Kibingo. In this district, there are 30 nursery schools, 65 primary schools, 18 secondary school, and 2 technical schools: CFJ Mugusa and CFJ Save. There are 212 secondary school teachers teaching 5495 students of whom 2519 are boys and 2976 girls. This means that there are more girls than boys attending secondary school in the District

There is a total of 52547 pupils attending primary schools in the district. These are taught by 791 teachers. This means that the (primary) school teacher per pupil ratio is ratio is 0.015. In nursery school, there are 31 teachers and 734 pupils among whom 354 boys and 380 girls.

Some school buildings are in very poor state and need to be rehabilitated These are Mukindo, Tamba, Karama, Nyange, Nyagahuru II, Gisagara A and Mamba.
Some Cells also have many children without any school such as Nyaruhengeri, Nyabikenke, Gitega, Gatovu,and Nyamagari. In total, there are 2 private schools, 9 private schools supported by the Government and 7 public schools. In 2006, 4 schools were constructed at sector level (ESI) which is: ESI Mugombwa, ESI Magi, ESI Mamba, and ESI Ndora. More school logistics such as: desks, stationery and operating budget as well as classrooms will need to be availed if these schools are to get a better education.

Priority areas of Intevention in education
Like in other sectors, the present Gisagara District Administration has set up targets to be achieved in the Education.sector This is embodied within the Imihigo- The District’s six Months Plan of Action. Some of the activities to be given priority in the near future include

Setting up public libraries in all 59 cells
Putting into place nursery schools in all 59 cells
Promoting hygiene in all schools;
Making follow up on management and running of all schools (nursery, primary school, secondary schools, technical schools (CFJ), and literacy schools).
Coming up with a statistics for better and informed decision making in education.
Sensitizing school dropouts to go back to school

Special Problems that have been identified
13 female pupils from CFJ Mugusa and some pupils in “College Immaculée” are traumatized by the Genocide but now they have gone back to school. Notice that the number of pupils in CFJ Mugusa is 167 and 10 teachers, whereas in CFG Save, there are 68 pupils and 8 teachers.
