Gisagara District location on the Rwandan Map Gisagara District is one of the 8 Districts that make up southern province. It is made up of 13 sectors which are Gikonko, Gishubi, Kansi, Kibilizi, Kigembe, Mamba, Muganza, Mugombwa, Mukindo, Musha, Ndora, Nyanza and Save. These sectors are subdivided into 59 Cells and 524 agglomerates. The District covers a surface area of 678km2. It is located in the South-Eastern part of the country as it is shown on the map above It is bordered in the South by the Republic of Burundi, in the North by Nyanza District, and in the West by Huye and Nyaruguru Districts.
The District has got two agro-climatic regions: Mayaga and Bwanamukali (Southern Plateau). Roughly, Mayaga is extended to the Sectors of Musha, Gikonko and Mamba, a part of Mukindo, Muganza, Ndora and Gishubi, Bwanamukali occupies the left land. Generally, Gisagara District, like the entire Rwanda, has got a temperate climate by altitude even if it is geographically located near the Equator. However, it should be noted that the succession of seasons becomes irregular from year to year and that time vagaries provocate dryness by regions. Average annual temperatures generally oscillate around 200c with amplitudes changing between 150c and 200c and annual rainfalls of about 1200 mm. Gisagara District is surrounded in the South by Akanyaru River. Principal tributaries of Akanyaru are Migina, Akabogobogo, Mirayi and Isumo. The latter collects all waters of Nyirabageni, Mushaduka and Nyarwambu. It is necessary to add that the District hydrography is also made of dense network of water sources and streams that snake the bottom of valleys inside the District. As a whole, the district has got a hilly relief with a few lowlands in the South (Nyanza, Kigembe, a small part of Mugombwa and Kansi). It has also some mountain peaks like Makwaza and Remera mountains in the South and Mt Muyaga in the North.
